Top 20 Support SongsYes, we jump on the Blue Monday wagon this year for one reason only; SUPPORT!
If there are any folks who feel miserable (and I know plenty, unfortunately), this list is for you. I truly hope this makes you feel slightly better.
Feel free to drop any comments and please add new songs to this list so we can broadcast a Top 100 next year.

1. Coldplay - Fix You

About: A friend who will do his best to fix you when you've lost someone very important.
Why: Fix You, to me, truly is the number one support song. Although you lose someone you love so much and everything goes wrong, lights wil guide you home (wherever that is), and there's always someone there who really wants to make you feel better.
If you think you are tough as a brick, but you are going through a difficult time, have a listen to this song and try not to cry. If you succeed in doing this, tell me your secret...
Line Of Support: Tears stream down your face, I promise you I will learn from my mistakes. Lights will guide you home and ignite your bones and I will try to fix you.

2. Massive Attack and Tracey Thorn- Protection

About: Accepting you can't solve someone else's problems, you can't change how someone else feels or thinks, but you do have a choice to be there for someone, when they need your love and protection...
Why: The hardest time is when your friend is going through a tough period. Protection is about being there for someone you care about and protect him or her, male or female. You don't have to understand or solve everything, but you'll be there, no matter what. You need someone to count on and vice versa.
Line Of Support: I've leaned on me for years, now you can lean on me. That's more than love, that's the way it should be; I can't change the way you feel, but I can put my arms around you.

3. Carole King - You've Got A Friend

About:
Needing someone you can count on, in good times and bad times.
Why: So many people love this song and rightfully so. Whether you believe this song is about a God, someone who passed away, a parent or a very, very good friend, you need to have faith that there are people out there who will support you and listen to you.
Line Of Support: When you're down and troubled and you need some love and care and nothing is going right, close your eyes and think of me and soon I will be there to brighten up even your darkest night.

4. The Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

About: Someone who lived in isolation / misery and finally met someone he loves. They both feel as happy as they have ever been, chasing unlikely dreams in the big city.
Why: A bittersweet, but powerful song. If you can honestly say that you wouldn't mind dying with that special person, right then right there, you have found the absolute love of your life. The light (that never goes out) resembles hope.
I have always thought that this is song about a gay teenage boy who was just kicked out of the house by his parents and had nowhere else to go and found the love of his life in the streets of a city.
Line Of Support: And if a double-decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die

5. Elbow - On A Day Like This

About: During a brief moment of self-reflection, realizing that you have fallen in love (again). You want to stay with that special person for the rest of your life, even when your lips are thin.
Why: You only need one exceptional day a year to make you feel like you want to hug the world. You don't need any words, just love. If you can achieve this by doing the most basic things in life like drinking in the morning sun, you have passed the exam of life.
Line Of Support: So throw those curtains wide. One day like this a year'd see me right.

6. Spinvis - Kom Terug

About: This song is all about feeling better and Spinvis gives you some of the best advice you need, to enjoy life to the fullest.
Why: If you are dutch and understand the lyrics, this is just a guide to live a basic, happy life without losing sight of others around you. Look through the eyes of your children and throw a stone to the day, as far as you can.
Line Of Support: reis ver, drink wijn, denk na, lach hard, duik diep, kom terug.(travel far, drink wine, think, laugh hard, dive deep, come back.)

7. Bill Withers - Lean On Me

About:  Helping a friend in times of troubles, but also needing a friend to share your problems with.
Why: Being there and support your friend, no matter how big his or her problems are. It's not even a question; you just help eachother.
Line Of Support: Lean on me when you're not strong and I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on. For it won't be long 'til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

8. Fleet Foxes - Mykonos

About: The lyrics are cryptic and difficult to explain, but basically keep in mind not to underestimate how hard is to find a real friend.
Why: Like the folks in Rolling Stone Mag said; salvation for the ears. It makes me feel comfortable.
Line Of Support: When I'm walking brother don't you forget, It ain't often that you'll ever find a friend

9. Kate Rogers - Fine

About: Looking for anwers during a difficult time.
Why: Kate tells the listener that she's been through all the shit that you are going through right now. Everything will work out fine, but just don't lose your head while looking for all the right answers.
Line Of Support: Trust your own decisions and you won't lose sight. See the future through, the past will lead the way for you

10. Noir Desir - Le Vent Nous Portera

About: The journeys you make in your life and that the consequences of your actions are sometimes overrated.
Why: The mysterious lyrics combined with Manu Chao on bandoneon, make this such a beautful song. On the roads of your life, you can make various turns and if you don't want to walk or drive, you just let the wind carry you.
Line Of Support: Je n'ai pas peur de la route. Faudrait voir, faut qu'on écoute. Des méandres au creux des reins et tout ira bien là. Le vent nous emportera. (I'm not afraid of the journey. We should watch and listen to the windings of our inner soul and everything will be alright. The wind will carry us along the way.)

11. S.W. - Everything Will Be Perfect

About: A One minute feel-good tune, part of S.W.'s "Fields Of Metallic Funk" epos
Why: No matter how I feel, this song always brings a smile on face and reminds me that although today coul've been a shitty day, you might actually have the power to make tomorrow as perfect as you want it to be.
Line Of Support: Everything will be perfect, tonight and forever.

12. Sia - Soon We'll Be Found

About: Being mentally lost after a fight but knowing that things will get better over a good night's sleep
Why: This is one of the things that happen in every relationship, but the power to forgive eachother the next day is so much more meaningful then fighting over stuff the day before.
Line Of Support: Well it's been rough but we'll be just fine. We'll work it out yeah we'll survive. You musn't let a few bad times dictate.

13. Claudia De Breij - Mag Ik Dan Bij Jou

About: Sweet little dutch gem about needing eachother in good and bad times
Why: Claudia is completely open and honest and pushes the right buttons (no pun intended) by asking her lover wether or not she can be with her during periodes of war, sadness, love and when she's old and dying.
Line Of Support: Want als ik bij jou mag, mag jij altijd bij mij. Kom wanneer je wilt, ik hou een kamer voor je vrij. (If I can be with you, you can always be with me. Come over whenever you want, I will keep a spare room for you.)

14. Dido - Thank You

About: The way you feel after a night of heavy partying and drinking. It's raining, you came out of bed too late and feel slightly depressed, but the minute you see the picture of your loved one(s), you immediately feel stronger.
Why: Although many folks think that this song is about sad things, the lyrics are so uplifting and give me a boost everytime I hear it. A solid supporting tune.
Line Of Support:  Even if my house falls down now, I wouldn't have a clue, because you're near me and I want to thank you for giving me the best day of my life

15. Fink - Yesterday Was Hard On All Of Us

About: The day after a passionate fight / argument and how to move on from there.
Why: The "support-factor" is a bit questionable, but there is clearly a positive message at the end of the song. No matter how big the argument is, we'll do our best to stay together.
Line Of Support: From cradle to grave, from ashes to ashes, from dust to dust. Because our paths they cross.

16. Mandalay - Beautiful

About: The strength to start again, be reborn and accept yourself the way you are; beautful.
Why: The perfect song to listen to after a rough time. While listening to it in a garden, flowers around you, sun shining on your face, you'll come to realize that you are that special person.
Line Of Support: You can ignore what you've become. Take it out and see it, die again. You can be here, for who's a friend. Do you know, you're beautiful.

17. Carly Simon - Two Little Sisters

About: 2 completely different sisters and their thoughts about the future and the love they share for another.
Why: You just have to be a sister to "feel" the lyrics of this song, or watch the movie Marvins Room.
Lines Of Support: What will you do when the nights get cold? When the stars grow dim and your dreams seem old? Watcha gonna do when winter calls and your flowers fall from the garden walls?
I'll come home to you, you'll come home to me. My love will be your remedy. I'll choose you and you'll choose me. We'll be two daughters dancing by the edge of the sea.

18. Cesaria Evora - Sodade

About: Longing to be with someone you love.
Why: Capverdian singer Cesaria Evora is the master creator of the "Sodade" genre. Although there is no exact translation, Sodade means a special kind of passionate longing for something or someone.
Line Of Support: Si bo 'screve' me, 'M ta 'screve be. Si bo 'squece me, 'm  ta 'squece be. Até dia qui bo volta. (If you write me letter, I will write you back. If you forget me, I will forget you, until the day you come back)

19. Kings Of Tomorrow - Finally

About: The passing of time and what time can do to heal wounds.
Why: No other (deep) house track has a more powerful message and after 10 years, still stands the tests of time.
Line Of Support: Where do we go from here? Time ain't nothing but time. I now have no fear of my fears and no more tears to cry.

20. Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars

About: Longing for someone and dreaming about being together.
Why: This song, although it has been played over and over again on every radio-station for the last 5 years, perfectly describes the feelings you have for a certain someone that you love to death.
Line Of Support: If I lay here, if I just lay here, would you lie with me? And just forget the world...
