Going through all these online year lists irritates the shizzle out of me. The main reason is that most serious journalists and bloggers have the same albums in their 2013 list as I do. Frustation...
So for f*cks sake, let's go through my list of 2013, but make it quick.
1. Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
Funky electro-punk heroes make huge come-back album with some of the best producers in the history of dance. This album has changed much, opened many eyes and gave credit to the originators of disco, house and modern dance. Sceptics galore, but this album is perfect. Music lovers will still talk about it in 10 years' time. I know I will.
2. Eels - Wonderful Glorious
This album has been on repeat since its release early January. I have been to 2 shows this year and the tracks sound excellent in a live setting. Pure and solid Rock 'N Roll with an E twist, baby.
3. Arcade Fire – Reflektor
"Reflektor" is pure magic. Some bits are eerie and haunting, some tunes are just pure mayhem. Love it.
4. London Grammar - If You Wait
As a true Triphop, Dream-Pop and Chill Out lover I was thrilled to hear this quality stuff which brings back memories to Moloko, Lamb, Portishead and others. Way more commercial, but the production is top notch.
5. Arctic Monkeys - AM
Brilliant? Brilliant! This is Britpop the way we like it.
6. Agnes Obel - Aventine
I first heard this album while I was an early customer in a record store in Amsterdam. I stayed for over an hour and bought the Deluxe box, which every piano-singer-songwriter addict should have done. This was my number 1 Autumn album.
7. David Bowie - The Next Day
As always with Bowie albums, some tracks are a bit weird, but my opinion is that this is his best album since the 80s. The "Hello Steve Reich remix by James Murphy" of Love Is Lost is the best remix of 2013.
8. Tricky - False Idols
I always wondered if Tricky could come close to his masterpiece Maxinquaye but gave up hoping several years ago. Guess what, I consider False Idols, his 2nd best album. Returning to his roots was the best thing Tricky could have done.
9. Noah & The Whale - Heart of Nowhere
Pure and honest pop with excellent lyrics. Both Heart Of Nowhere and Daft Punks R.A.M. were my favorite summer holiday albums.
10. Trentemøller – Lost
What a huge thrill. Spooky stuff at times, but not too weird.
On a serious note; overall, 2013 was a great year for music lovers like me. I truly heard some excellent stuff. Artists have been reinventing themselves and new bands and singer-songwriters are working their ass off to become part of the spotlights. I noticed way less "over-hyped-music" than previous years (feel free to disagree). One could only hope that this trend will continue in 2014.
Best wishes and a wonderful, glorious 2014,
the MOM team
